I have decorating envy. I admire the houses in the
neighborhood that always look perfect. Mine is not quite so perfect. From the
junk kids leave in the driveway- to the front garden that looks a little past
its prime; having pristine curb appeal is not likely to happen on my watch.
That slightly neglected look works perfectly for Halloween, which is probably
why I love decorating for that holiday more than any other. We have a project
that you will absolutely love, and we promise that you can not only pull it
off, you can reuse it every year—talk about bang for your buck!
Window Monsters:
1.
Measure your windows- you want to know what size monsters to order!
3.
Go to the local fabric store and pick up clear
vinyl. We got ours at JoAnn Fabrics and used a 40% coupon (google search- there is always something). We purchased 10
yards of 12 gauge clear vinyl regularly $5.99 a yard, but we got it for only
$35.94 with coupon. This is the kind of stuff you see on picnic tables from
time to time. Durable, and cheap! 10 yards means we were left with A LOT of extra... if you don't want extra use your measurements!
4.
Cut the clear plastic to size for each window and quickly hold it up to a few of your windows to ensure your sizing/measuring was accurate.
5.
Trim the monsters to fit the plastic. You can tape them on the windows (don’t remove the backing paper yet) to see
how they will look before installing them on the vinyl.
6.
When you’re ready to put the monsters on the plastic/vinyl ‘windows’, we recommend getting a helper—the monsters really want to
stick to the clear vinyl (really really). Once it is down, that’s where it is staying.
a.
To place the monster, simply peel off the
backing paper and lay the monster and the top masking tape layer over the clear
plastic. Have someone help you hold the corners taut and then slowly lower it and begin smoothing it out.
b.
Smooth the monster down with your handy
installation tool and slowly remove the masking tape layer, leaving the monster
on the clear vinyl.
c.
You will have some wrinkles and bubbling in the
vinyl. We found that it doesn’t make a difference once the monster is up in the
window (so don’t stress the small stuff).
7.
Once the monster is on the vinyl ‘window’ use
clear tape or removable glue dots to adhere the vinyl to your window. We put them on the inside of the windows facing out, but it is really up to you.
8.
Repeat for the remaining monsters
9.
Stand back and enjoy your handiwork after the
sun goes down!
You can install the monsters directly to your glass windows
(faster & cheaper), but keep in mind that they can’t be reused if you
install them this way. On the plastic you can untape them from your windows, roll them up- and next year when the crisp cool air and pumpkin spice lattes return you can unroll them and simply tape them back up... easy!
